Jesse Plemons, an Oscar nominee, is set to take on the role of Plutarch Heavensbee in the upcoming film The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. This movie, based on Suzanne Collins’ best-selling book, adds Plemons to an already impressive cast, including Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, and Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner.
Plutarch Heavensbee is a key character, known for becoming a future Head Gamemaker and a leader of the rebellion. This character was previously portrayed by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman in the films The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Parts 1 and 2, which marked his final performances. In Sunrise on the Reaping, the story kicks off with a young Plutarch in District 12 during the reaping of the Tributes.
The book Sunrise on the Reaping made a splash upon its release, selling 1.5 million copies within its first week in several countries, including the U.S. Sales in the U.S. alone reached an impressive 1.2 million, nearly doubling the opening week figures of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
Set just twenty-four years before the original Hunger Games, the story unfolds on the morning of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.
Fans can expect to see the film adaptation hit theaters on November 20, 2026. Directed by Francis Lawrence, the screenplay is crafted by Billy Ray, with Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson producing. The entire franchise has grossed over $3.3 billion at the box office, showcasing its massive appeal.
Lionsgate’s Erin Westerman expressed excitement about Plemons stepping into this iconic role, calling him one of the most gifted actors today. “His take on Plutarch will honor what fans love while bringing something new to the character,” she stated. Producer Jacobson shares this enthusiasm, recalling how Plemons has been a favorite of hers since Friday Night Lights.
Plemons recently starred in the Netflix series Zero Day alongside Robert De Niro and has received acclaim for his performances in The Power of the Dog and Killers of the Flower Moon. He’s also set to collaborate again with director Yorgos Lanthimos in Bugonia.
As fans await this new installment in the Hunger Games saga, it’s clear that the combination of a powerful cast and a gripping story will keep audiences eagerly anticipating its release.
