Recent filings about the Nintendo Switch 2 suggest it will support Near Field Communication (NFC). This likely means Amiibo figures will work with the new console.
The Verge noted that the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) filings show an RFID feature in the right Joy-Con, just like the original Switch. Fans are curious if the new console will continue to support the Amiibo that unlocks in-game content.
The filings also confirm that you can charge the Switch 2 through a USB-C port located at both the bottom and top of the device. It will support the faster Wi-Fi 6 standard, allowing for better internet speeds compared to the original Switch’s Wi-Fi 5. However, there’s no mention of even newer technologies like Wi-Fi 7.
Regarding power, the filings maintain a maximum of 15V, but they mention an AC adapter rated up to 20V, leaving the actual charging speed uncertain.
A Nintendo patent hinted at a new feature where the Joy-Con controllers can be attached upside down. This could change gameplay by allowing players to choose button placements, similar to how smartphones operate. Instead of fixed rails, the new controllers seem to use magnets for flexible attachment.
If the upside-down attachment works as suggested, Nintendo will likely elaborate on it in an upcoming Nintendo Direct event.
The release of the Nintendo Switch 2 seems close, although Nintendo hasn’t announced a specific date. Reports indicate it might arrive between June and September, aided by hands-on events leading up to June and remarks from the Greedfall 2 publisher about a release before September.
The Switch 2 was initially unveiled in January, showing some features such as backwards compatibility and a second USB-C port. However, many details remain unclear, including the purpose of a new Joy-Con button.
