Since 2016, Towards Data Science has grown into the largest publication on Medium, focusing on data science, machine learning, and AI. Our success is largely thanks to the platform that Medium provides.
However, starting February 3, 2025, Towards Data Science will become an independent publication. We believe this shift will help us better serve our community of readers and contributors. Recently, Medium changed some policies, prompting us to expedite our plan for independence. With this move, we will have full control over our editorial direction and ensure our growth aligns with our vision.
Today, we’re excited to launch our new WordPress site. While some features are still being finalized, we are working closely with our contributors to make this transition as smooth as possible. Our mission remains the same: delivering in-depth content on data science, machine learning, and AI. Now, we can support our writers even better, using innovative promotional tools, advanced analytics, and vibrant community features to enhance engagement and growth.
Why We’re Going Independent
We value the tools Medium provides, which have helped many, including us, reach wider audiences. However, as Medium evolves, we think our goals will be better served on an independent platform. Here are key reasons for this change:
- Open Access – We believe everyone should access our articles for free. By moving off Medium, all our content will be accessible without paywalls.
- Support for Authors – Our new platform offers authors more room to promote their work, allowing them to connect with new readers.
- Domain Authority – Being independent means we can keep and grow our visibility online. It also gives us room to explore new content formats and deepen relationships with our audience.
Current authors can expect an email soon with details on how to join the new platform. New contributors are welcome! We’ll soon be accepting submissions for the new site.

Medium recently updated its SEO and domain structure, causing articles from TowardsDataScience.com to redirect to Medium URLs. This change affects how independent publications maintain their brand visibility. Given this shift, now is the right time for us to establish our independence.
Medium is still a great platform for many, but we aim to go beyond its limits. For Towards Data Science, this transition isn’t just about control; it’s a major step towards growing a publication that we’ve been nurturing for the past eight years.

We want to clarify that we will only migrate content to our new site if we have the proper rights. Your work will remain under your control, and we’ll honor any previous agreements you’ve made. Only content we have permission to use will be transferred, ensuring your intellectual property is respected throughout this process.
