Mikko Rantanen was recently traded from the Avalanche to the Carolina Hurricanes, but now it looks like he might be changing teams again. Reports say he could be on his way to the Dallas Stars just before the trade deadline.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman shared late Thursday that talks between the Hurricanes and the Stars were heating up. Just a few hours later, he mentioned a potential deal was in the works. If everything goes as planned, the Stars would not only acquire Rantanen but also extend his contract right away.
Frank Seravalli from Daily Faceoff added that negotiations for Rantanen’s new contract are happening with the consent of the Hurricanes. This trade is contingent upon reaching an agreement for an extension.
The details of the proposed contract are still unclear. However, it seems likely that Rantanen will be on the move if the Stars’ general manager, Jim Nill, can meet the demands set by Rantanen’s representatives.
If this trade happens, Rantanen will return to Denver on March 16 to face his old team for the first time since his recent move. Both the Avalanche and the Stars are still vying for playoff spots, and there’s a strong chance they could meet in the first round of the postseason.
Rantanen’s situation is partly due to his unwillingness to sign an extension with the Hurricanes. They had traded for him, giving up Martin Necas, Jack Drury, and two draft picks, and they didn’t want to risk losing him in free agency come July 1.
Since joining Carolina, Rantanen has struggled to find his scoring touch. After playing his 13th game with the Hurricanes, he has only two goals and four assists. This is a big drop compared to the impressive point totals he was putting up with the Avalanche.
As the trade deadline approaches, all eyes will be on Rantanen and where he might end up next.
