Huntington, W.Va. – The George Mason men’s soccer team kicked off their season against the highly-ranked Marshall University, losing 2-1 in a tightly contested match at Hoops Family Field.
Marshall struck first in the 29th minute with a header from junior forward Larry Noel, converting a corner kick to put the Thundering Herd ahead. They added to their lead just before halftime when sophomore David de la Vibora scored from close range after a defensive error, making it 2-0.
As the second half began, George Mason fought back. Just two minutes in, they got on the board thanks to an own goal. Junior midfielder James Eliuda’s cross deflected off a Marshall defender and found the net, narrowing the gap to 2-1.
George Mason’s goalkeeper, Jaume Salvado, made a crucial save late in the game, preventing a third goal from Marshall and keeping his team in the match. Despite their efforts, the Patriots couldn’t equalize.
In terms of statistics, Marshall dominated with 14 shots compared to George Mason’s 5, including 6 on goal vs. the Patriots’ 1. The Thundering Herd also had a significant edge in corner kicks, earning 7 while George Mason managed 3.
