According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Guerrero and the Blue Jays couldn’t come to an agreement on a contract extension before the deadline. This means he’s likely to become a free agent after the 2025 season. Passan noted that Guerrero isn’t planning to negotiate in-season, which further opens the door for other teams.
This could be good for the Red Sox. Reports suggest Guerrero has a strong interest in playing for Boston if he leaves Toronto. The Red Sox are also keen on his powerful swing. An insider mentioned that Boston has a decent chance to sign Guerrero if he hits free agency.
How strong is that chance? Another insider hinted that the Red Sox delayed adding Alex Bregman from Houston to focus on Guerrero. While Bregman did end up in Boston, it doesn’t mean the Red Sox will shy away from pursuing Guerrero this winter.
Currently, there isn’t an obvious spot for Guerrero on the team. However, considering the home runs he could hit at Fenway Park, this is definitely a move the Red Sox should consider when the time is right.
