CM Omar Abdullah Responds to RSS Leaders: Discover Why We Call It Bharat, Not India

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah recently expressed that citizens can refer to India by any name they choose—Bharat, India, or Hindustan. His remarks came in response to RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, who insisted that the country should be called Bharat exclusively. Abdullah emphasized that it doesn’t matter which name people prefer, as all three names are part of the nation’s identity.

He pointed out that both “Bharat” and “India” appear on government and military aircraft, like the Indian Air Force and Army. “It’s the Constitution of India and the Reserve Bank of India. If we’re going to call it Bharat, why are there other names used in these contexts?” he asked.

To highlight the cultural connection, Abdullah quoted the famous song “Sare Jahan Se Achcha, Hindustan Hamara,” showcasing the pride in the term Hindustan. His takeaway was clear: people can choose the name that resonates with them the most.

In other discussions, Abdullah addressed a committee formed to regularize daily wage jobs, giving them a six-month deadline to complete their work. He also spoke on the budget, referring to it as a “love letter” to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He welcomed criticism from the opposition, acknowledging that it’s expected in a democratic setup.

Interestingly, Abdullah’s use of a metaphorical “love letter” sheds light on the ongoing challenges in the region, where budget allocation often signifies more than just numbers—it’s about serving a diverse population.

According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, 79% of Indians feel a strong connection to their national identity. This reflects the ongoing discourse around national names and identity. Historical context adds to this conversation; India has been known by various names through its rich history, each carrying its significance.

In a world where identity matters more than ever, the choice of name can symbolize deeper cultural and political beliefs. Abdullah reminds us that the essence of a nation lies not just in its name, but in its spirit and the diversity of its people.
