At the 2026 Game Developers Conference, Jason Ronald, Microsoft’s VP for Next Generation, shared exciting news about the future of Xbox. The upcoming console, called Project Helix, will feature a powerful custom AMD chip. This chip promises to greatly enhance ray tracing performance, making graphics even more realistic. It will also include advanced machine learning technology for smoother gameplay with frame generation.
However, don’t expect to see this next-gen console right away. Microsoft plans to start sending alpha versions to developers in 2027.
Ronald mentioned that the shift towards unity between Xbox and Windows is significant. With Project Helix, players will not only play console games but also PC games. He emphasized the growing importance of Windows in the Xbox ecosystem. “We’re bringing the best of Xbox to Windows,” he said.
Moreover, Microsoft plans to roll out the Xbox mode from its handheld device, the Xbox Ally, to more Windows computers starting this April. This will allow gamers to enjoy Xbox features seamlessly on their PCs. They are also introducing Advanced Shader Delivery, which will speed up game loading by precompiling shaders for quicker updates.
For the gamers, this means they can now pick up and play their favorite titles wherever they are, whether on console, PC, or in the cloud. Ronald pointed out that most players typically switch between 3-5 games at a time, so this flexibility is valuable.
Microsoft is also aiming to simplify game development. Instead of building separate versions for Xbox and Windows, developers can now write the majority of their code once. This change could save time and effort for game creators. Although not every game will follow this model, the existing Xbox Play Anywhere program allows players to buy a game once and enjoy it across different devices. Currently, there are over 1,500 titles available through this program.
As part of Xbox’s 25th anniversary, the company is committed to preserving older games. Ronald mentioned plans to re-release classic titles, showcasing Microsoft’s dedication to keeping gaming history alive.
