The University of Arizona has made a significant change to its new dorm project at Speedway Boulevard and Campbell Avenue. Initially set to be a towering 19-story building, it will now be a nine-story structure. Despite the height reduction, the dorm will still provide housing for 1,300 first-year students and will include a dining hall.
This project, expected to open in fall 2028, won’t cost the university anything upfront. The Collegiate Housing Foundation, a non-profit organization, is funding the development and will recover its investment over 50 years through student fees.
Officials at the university emphasize the importance of on-campus living for student success. In fact, students who spend at least one year in campus housing have a 50% higher graduation rate than their peers who do not. University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella stated that living on campus significantly enhances academic performance and overall student engagement.
Earlier, the site housed the old Palm Shadows Apartments, which have been demolished to make way for the new development. This change aligns with the university’s ongoing plans to modernize older facilities on campus.
