Exciting Upset at Tata Steel Chess: Gukesh Soars to World No. 3 After Praggnanandhaa’s Stunning Victory Over Fabiano Caruana!

Gukesh has made headlines by reaching the No. 3 spot in the FIDE live ratings after his draw against Wei Yi from China in the Tata Steel chess tournament. This was a significant shift because Praggnanandhaa’s victory over Fabiano Caruana also contributed to Gukesh’s rise.

Although Gukesh is currently ranked third in real-time ratings, FIDE’s official list for February still shows him at No. 5 with a rating of 2777, the score he had before the Tata Steel event. This means that Arjun Erigaisi is listed as World No. 4 with a rating of 2801, despite losing 33 points during the tournament.

In the ongoing Tata Steel tournament, Gukesh has improved his rating by 16 points, placing him at 2793. He is just one point away from his highest rating ever, 2794, achieved back in October 2024.

As the tournament nears its end with two rounds remaining, Gukesh is leading the masters standings. He is a half point ahead of competitors Praggnanandhaa and Nodirbek Abdusattarov, who are tied for second place.

This tournament marks Gukesh’s first appearance since he became the youngest world champion ever just last month, defeating Ding Liren in Singapore. Now, he stands as India’s top player at the Wijk aan Zee tournament, especially since Arjun Erigaisi has struggled and dropped to No. 6.

Gukesh’s main challenge in the Tata Steel event was against Wei Yi. In their match, Gukesh chose the Italian Opening, maintaining a balanced position for much of the game. The match concluded in a draw after they reached an equal rook and pawn endgame.

With his consistent performance, Gukesh has firmly established himself as a prominent figure in the chess world. As the tournament unfolds, fans eagerly await how he will conclude this exciting competition.
