SEONGNAM, South Korea – The U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys Education Center recently kicked off a new initiative at the K-16 Airfield community activity center to expand educational opportunities. On January 23, they celebrated the start of in-person college courses, which will begin in March.
Soldiers at K-16 will now have easier access to classes offered by the University of Maryland Global Campus and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Clara Sagoe, who leads the Army Continuing Education Services at USAG Humphreys, explained that the aim is to make education more accessible. “We want to empower the K-16 community by supporting their academic journey,” she said.
During the opening, Lt. Col. William Gratz, commander of the 2-2 Assault Helicopter Battalion, encouraged everyone to take advantage of this opportunity. He emphasized that starting classes now can lead to degrees in just a few years: “Four years will pass regardless. Start one class at a time, and in four years, you could have a bachelor’s or associate degree.” Gratz reassured Soldiers that education center counselors are ready to help them define and pursue their goals despite any challenges they might face.
The Humphreys Education Center offers various educational programs, including both in-person and online flexible learning options tailored to military schedules. They partner with colleges, universities, and vocational schools across the U.S. to ensure service members can find the right program for them.
USAG Humphreys serves as the “Army’s Home in Korea,” overseeing multiple locations, including Camp Humphreys and the K-16 Airfield. This garrison is a significant hub for U.S. Forces Korea, which further enhances the community’s access to education and other resources.
