On Saturday, Indian Railways held a meeting at Rail Bhawan, led by Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu. The focus was on improving rail services, specifically ticketing and onboard catering.
The ministry announced plans to gradually expand a new facility across all trains. A major point of discussion was the ongoing efforts to tackle ticket booking through fake identities. Since implementing strict user identity checks, Indian Railways has seen about 5,000 new user IDs being added daily on the IRCTC website, significantly down from the nearly one lakh new IDs added before these reforms. To date, over 3.03 crore fake accounts have been deactivated, with another 2.7 crore under scrutiny for suspicious activities.
Vaishnaw and Bittu instructed officials to ensure the ticketing system is user-friendly for all genuine travelers.
In addition, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is testing a new approach to meal services on select trains. They’re separating meal production from service, paving the way for high-quality food from popular brands. This initiative aims to enhance the onboard experience for around 16.5 lakh meals served daily across Indian Railways.
Trials are underway on specific routes, including Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat trains, with varied menus featuring local delicacies. Early feedback has been positive, indicating passengers appreciate the improved meal quality.
These changes come at a time when rail travel is a priority for many, especially with the rise in passenger numbers post-pandemic. Railways can promote better services thanks to advances in technology and customer feedback. With such initiatives, Indian Railways hopes to create a more enjoyable journey for every passenger.
