Santiago: Indian missions around the globe marked India’s 79th Independence Day with lively celebrations that reflected deep cultural ties and shared values.

In Chile, the Indian Embassy in Santiago embraced the occasion fully. Ambassador Abhilasha Joshi raised the national flag, reading President Droupadi Murmu’s message and key points from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech at the Red Fort. He outlined hopes for a thriving India by 2047.

The atmosphere was charged with patriotism, with over 300 attendees from the Indian diaspora and friends of India participating. Guests enjoyed an array of delicious Indian dishes, highlighting the country’s rich culinary heritage.

These events emphasize the role of the Indian community in bolstering relationships between India and Chile.

In the U.S., the Indian Consulate General in New York presented “Shakti – Divine Energy,” a program featuring traditional dance styles like Odissi and Bharatanatyam, alongside contemporary performances from artists in both India and the U.S. This celebration partnered with the 44th Annual Battery Dance Festival, showcasing cultural bonds that span continents.

In Houston, Consul General D.C. Manjunath joined community leaders for a celebration at India House, an iconic venue for the Indian-American community.

Further afield, the Indian High Commission and Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre in Georgetown, Guyana, celebrated with enthusiasm, drawing participants from various sectors of society.

In Trinidad and Tobago, the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute for Cultural Co-operation included cultural performances that highlighted India’s diverse heritage.

These celebrations are more than just events; they represent a shared commitment to India’s progress and the importance of the diaspora in nurturing international relationships.

Interestingly, according to recent surveys, nearly 70% of Indian expatriates feel a strong connection to their homeland, highlighting the power of cultural events in keeping those ties alive.
