Experience the Thrill: Live Military Helicopter Demonstration Lights Up the Skies Over Penticton!

The Emergency Services Show and Shine event took place at Okanagan Lake Park, bringing together various emergency service teams for a fun, educational day on May 31. The highlight? A dramatic demonstration by the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 442 Squadron Cormorant helicopter.

This event ran from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and showcased the efforts of local heroes—RCMP officers, firefighters, search and rescue teams, and organizations like the BC Emergency Health Services, Salvation Army, Red Cross, and Animal Lifeline Emergency Response Team. Attendees got a firsthand look at how these groups support our communities every day.

Sean Vaisler, the manager of emergency services at the RDOS, expressed excitement about the community’s involvement. He said, “It’s wonderful to see all the groups in South Okanagan and Similkameen coming together. This event highlights the good work they do and the equipment they use during emergencies.”

Visitors were treated to live rescue demonstrations at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The Cormorant helicopter, renowned for its search and rescue operations, flew over the lake, showcasing its impressive capabilities. According to the Canadian Armed Forces, this helicopter has assisted in rescuing mountain climbers, lost hikers, and ship crews.

Vaisler added, “Today’s demonstrations were part of a training mission. We’re thrilled to have the squadron join us.”

Alongside the demonstrations, the event offered hands-on activities and games for kids. Many enjoyed climbing into RCMP cruisers and fire trucks, drawing smiles and laughter from families.

Looking ahead, Vaisler hopes this could become a cherished annual tradition. “It’s a chance for everyone to connect and learn about the vital services in our region,” he said.

The importance of such events is clear. They not only reinforce community ties but also educate the public about emergency preparedness. According to a recent survey by the Emergency Preparedness Canada, nearly 70% of Canadians feel they lack knowledge about emergency procedures. Events like this bridge that gap, making communities safer and more informed.
