MADISON, Wis. – It’s that exciting time of year again! Many of us are thinking about New Year’s resolutions. In a recent chat with WMTV, UW Health psychologist Dr. Shilagh Mirgain shared some smart tips on how to stick with these goals.
First, don’t worry if you haven’t set a resolution yet. There’s still time! But, Dr. Mirgain pointed out that most people abandon theirs within weeks. To help you stay on track, she offered five ways to keep the momentum going.
1. Set Achievable Goals
Dr. Mirgain emphasized the importance of making sure your goals are attainable. “Choose something that matters to you, not just something you think you should do,” she said. This personal connection will make you more likely to stick with it.
2. Take Small Steps
“Every big journey starts with a single step,” she reminded us. Break your goals into smaller tasks. Completing these small steps can lead to big achievements by the end of the year.
3. Focus on Benefits
Dr. Mirgain talked about a key mindset: the “carrot versus stick” approach. Instead of criticizing yourself when things get tough, think about the positive outcomes of your goals. “Think about the value this goal brings to you and those around you,” she suggested.
4. Prepare for Obstacles
Challenges are part of any journey. Dr. Mirgain recommends planning for them. When you outline your goal, include an “if/then” statement. For example, “If I face this challenge, then I’ll do this instead.” This helps you stay proactive and ready to adapt.
5. Get Support
Don’t go it alone! Dr. Mirgain advised reaching out for support. Have a friend check in on you, set reminders on your phone, or create a system that keeps your goals fresh in your mind.
Research shows that around 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. But with the right strategies, you can beat the odds. According to a recent survey, people who share their goals with others are 33% more likely to achieve them.
In the age of social media, you can also find support online. Many people share their journeys on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, creating communities around similar goals. This shared experience can motivate you and make the process more enjoyable.
Sticking to your New Year’s resolution doesn’t have to be hard. With some thoughtful planning and support, you can turn your goals into lasting habits.
