The introduction of the ‘Samudra Pratap’ marks a significant step for India’s maritime capabilities. This ship is the first Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) designed and built in India for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). Not only does it showcase over 60% indigenous content, but it also aligns with the Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) and Make in India initiatives.
Measuring 114.5 meters long and 16.5 meters wide with a displacement of 4,170 tonnes, this vessel is the largest in the ICG fleet. It greatly expands the Coast Guard’s operational range. Equipped with advanced technology, it features a 30mm CRN-91 gun and two remote-controlled 12.7mm guns. The ship also uses cutting-edge systems, including:

– Integrated Platform Management System
– Automated Power Management System
– High-capacity external firefighting system
A notable aspect is its Dynamic Positioning capability, which enhances its operational efficiency during missions. The vessel also holds the FiFi-2 / FFV-2 notation certificate, indicating its advanced firefighting skills.
What sets ‘Samudra Pratap’ apart is its array of tools for pollution control. It has an Oil Fingerprinting machine and a Gyro-stabilized Standoff Active Chemical Detector, enabling effective response to oil spills. This transforms how pollution is addressed it can recover pollutants from viscous oil and analyze contaminants.
The induction ceremony was attended by notable officials, including DIG V. K. Parmar from the ICG and Shri Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, Chairman of GRSE (Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers). Their presence underscores the importance of this vessel to India’s maritime strategy.
