NASA is making strides in space exploration with a powerful new computer chip. This radiation-hardened processor promises up to 100 times the computing power of current spaceflight computers. Built by Microchip Technology and tested at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California, this chip is designed to handle the tough conditions of space.
Jim Butler, the project manager for High Performance Space Computing at JPL, emphasizes the tough tests these chips must undergo. “We’re putting them through radiation, thermal extremes, and shock tests,” he shares, highlighting their importance in ensuring reliable space missions. Space can be harsh, with high-energy particles that can disrupt electronics, pushing spacecraft into a “safe mode” until issues are resolved.
Landing on other planets presents unique challenges as well. Butler notes, “We simulate real-world conditions using data from actual NASA missions,” ensuring that the processor can handle the intense requirements of landing. These advancements are crucial for future missions to the Moon and Mars, as they may allow for greater autonomy in spacecraft, using artificial intelligence to make real-time decisions.
Testing began in February and has shown promising results. The new processor operates at 500 times the performance of existing radiation-hardened chips. As a fun milestone, the testing team sent out a message titled “Hello Universe,” reminiscent of early computing days.
This system-on-a-chip (SoC) is compact enough to fit in your hand, yet it comes packed with all necessary components like CPUs, memory, and networking units. SoCs are common in devices like smartphones, but these are built to last for years and travel millions, or even billions, of miles without a technician in sight.
Once certified for space, NASA plans to integrate this chip into various missions, from Earth orbiters to rovers and human habitats. Importantly, the technology’s usefulness extends beyond space; Microchip will adapt it for aviation and automotive industries on Earth.
