In just a few months, Marvel fans will finally get a chance to see the First Family hit the big screen with “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” This film represents a long-awaited dream for Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. What makes this movie intriguing is its setting in an alternate past—a retro-futuristic version of the mid-20th century. Picture a world where art deco meets science fiction.
As revealed in various exclusive previews, the film showcases Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), and Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn) before they become superheroes. In this story, they are simply talented astronauts on a dangerous mission in space. Unbeknownst to them, this mission will alter their lives forever, granting them extraordinary powers.
Director Matt Shakman aims to capture the hopeful spirit of the 1950s and 1960s, a time when the Space Race was at its peak. Shakman shares, “This isn’t just about superheroes; it’s about adventurers and explorers.” He imagines these astronauts becoming national icons, celebrated not just for their superhuman abilities but for their courage and curiosity as they venture into the unknown.
To give the film an authentic feel, Shakman draws inspiration from iconic filmmakers. He notes, “I want it to feel like it’s from 1965, much like how Stanley Kubrick might have made it.” With this in mind, they are using practical props, including a massive 14-foot spaceship miniature, reminiscent of the techniques used in classics like “2001: A Space Odyssey.” While there will still be computer-generated graphics, the focus is on creating a believable environment.
What sets this film apart in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is its independence. Shakman emphasizes that this story exists in its own universe, without connections to the multitude of superheroes and storylines audiences are used to. “There’s no Iron Man or Easter eggs,” he explains. This approach allows the film to be fresh and unique, even if it eventually connects with other Marvel projects down the line.
Interestingly, the film’s release comes at a time when superhero fatigue is creeping in among audiences. Recent research by the Pew Research Center indicates that while superhero movies remain popular, many viewers are starting to seek new narratives. This could be the perfect opportunity for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” to capture attention by offering a new direction for superhero storytelling.
Fans can expect to see the First Family back in action in “Avengers: Doomsday,” which has been confirmed as a future project. For now, though, their journey begins in the past, and it promises to be an exciting ride.
