A powerful explosion caused by a gas leak devastated the El Ricardo apartment building in Dallas on Thursday afternoon, injuring at least four people. The building is located at 409 E 9th St., near the Bishop Arts neighborhood and just south of downtown Dallas.
Firefighters responded quickly to the incident around 12:47 p.m. Photos from the scene showed thick black smoke and flames rising from the wreckage. Nearly 100 firefighters battled the fire, with 71 units responding to what became a 4-alarm emergency.
One resident of the area, Oliver Jimenez, shared his experience: “I felt my building shake and saw a little girl barely getting out of the debris.” Witnesses described a loud boom and chaos as people ran from the scene.
The injured were taken to various hospitals, with one at Methodist Dallas Medical Center in stable condition and another at Parkland Health also reported as stable. The Dallas Medical Examiner is on-site as investigations continue, and the number of casualties may change as search efforts proceed.
Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson updated the public on social media, expressing his concerns for those affected by the explosion. A family reunification center was established at WH Adamson High School for those seeking missing relatives.
