News 13, Carolina Furniture Concepts, and Two Men & a Truck are teaming up for the 14th annual Break the Hunger Food Drive. This event aims to combat child hunger during the summer months, a time when kids often miss meals provided at school.
Kids face heightened food insecurity when school is out. Many families struggle to provide nutritious meals. Summer food programs play a critical role, and this drive supports the YMCA’s Mobile Food Markets. These markets operate like free farmers’ markets, allowing families to choose fresh produce and staple items at no cost.
If you want to donate, just bring non-perishable food items to Carolina Furniture Concepts on Friday, June 12, from 5:00 AM to 7:00 PM. News 13 and YMCA staff will collect donations from your car, making it super easy. Two Men & a Truck will handle the packing and delivery.
Can’t make it on June 12? No problem! You can drop off donations at any YMCA location or at both Carolina Furniture Concepts stores before and after the event. You can also make financial contributions online.
Child hunger is a pressing issue. According to a recent Feeding America report, about 1 in 6 children may face hunger this summer. That’s more than 10 million kids in the U.S. alone. This makes events like Break the Hunger Food Drive essential for ensuring kids don’t go hungry.
Here’s a quick list of suggested items to donate:
Snack Pack Items:
- No-sugar-added fruit (e.g., applesauce or dried fruit)
- Canned chicken or tuna
- Whole-grain snacks (like crackers or granola bars)
- Low-sodium items (such as trail mix or nut butter)

- Lentils
- Canned vegetables
Join us on June 12 to help end childhood hunger in our community. It’s a small act that makes a big impact. For more information, you can check out resources from Feeding America here.
