FAA Announces Immediate Shutdown of Company Linked to Fatal New York Helicopter Crash

The recent helicopter crash in the Hudson River has shaken New York City. A sightseeing chopper from New York Helicopter Tours went down, tragically claiming the lives of all six people on board, including three children. In response, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has suspended the company’s operations and is reviewing its safety record.

This crash occurred while the Escobar family from Spain was celebrating a birthday in New York. Among the victims were parents Agustín Escobar and Mercè Camprubí, along with their children, ages 4, 9, and 11. Mayor Eric Adams expressed his condolences, noting the family had come to New York for a joyful occasion, emphasizing the tragic loss.

The pilot, identified as Seankese Johnson, was relatively new to commercial flying, with just 788 hours logged. He had received his commercial license in August 2023. This incident has reignited the debate over the safety of helicopter tours in New York City, particularly since accidents involving helicopters have killed at least 32 people in the city from 1977 to 2019, according to reports.

Historically, helicopter crash regulations became stricter after a 2018 tragedy where five passengers drowned after an aerial tour helicopter crash.
