Fabiano Caruana Reacts to 18-Year-Old World Champion Gukesh’s Quick Resignation After Just 18 Moves: ‘I Wouldn’t Have Done It So Soon!’

Fabiano Caruana recently had some sharp words for young chess player Gukesh Dommaraju. Gukesh surprised everyone by resigning after just 18 moves in their second game during the quarter-finals of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour in Weissenhaus.

Caruana described his quick victory as a sign of how the match was going. He felt calm before the game, saying it wasn’t particularly tough for him to play as White. “The game today was typical for someone trying to create chances too early,” he noted. Gukesh’s aggressive move, 5…f5, was risky. Caruana commented that it’s unusual to sacrifice a pawn so quickly.

On Gukesh’s decision to resign, Caruana admitted he didn’t see it coming at that moment but also questioned what options Gukesh had. He suggested that while he might consider resigning in that position, he probably wouldn’t do it so soon.

Chess great Judit Polgar weighed in, explaining that the opening position favored White, especially since Gukesh needed to win. She pointed out that White had no real threats and could stabilize the game easily.

So far in Weissenhaus, Gukesh hasn’t been able to find his footing. He lost to both Alireza Firouzja and Magnus Carlsen in the rapid section, which determined the seeding for the knockout phase. Even though he barely made it into the quarter-finals, he has lost both classical games against Caruana.
