Kirk Cousins is ready for a new opportunity as a starting quarterback. He made this clear during conversations with Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, coach Raheem Morris, and General Manager Terry Fontenot earlier this year. Morris hinted that if a trade makes sense for both sides, the Falcons would consider it. However, no commitments have been made yet.
Blank acknowledged that the situation is complex. He mentioned, "At the end of the day, what happens happens." He recognizes Cousins’ desire to start while also balancing the team’s responsibilities. Cousins signed a substantial four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons last season, hoping to secure the starting role. However, the Falcons drafted quarterback Michael Penix in the first round, complicating Cousins’ position this year.
Despite these changes, Blank stated the team is open to having Cousins as a backup. He pointed out that “we’ve already paid him” and emphasized that the original plan—signing Cousins and drafting Penix—was sound for both parties. Incidentally, Cousins’ contract guaranteed him an extra $10 million for remaining with the team past a specific date.
Cousins might end up making a lot of money for just a handful of starts this season. Penix took the starting role in Week 16, which leaves Cousins’ future uncertain heading into 2025.
Blank reflected on the challenges of change, saying, “There is no point in living in the past.” He acknowledged that circumstances have shifted, but such changes are a part of the game and life itself.
In recent developments in the NFL, trades and player movements are becoming increasingly strategic, especially with young talent hitting the draft. According to a 2023 survey by sports analysts, teams that invest in young quarterbacks are finding more success in the long run. This trend shows how crucial it is for franchises to balance veteran players with emerging talent.
The Falcons’ willingness to consider all options, including a potential trade for Cousins, is a sign of the evolving dynamics in professional football. Teams are now focusing not just on immediate needs, but also on their long-term vision and financial strategies.
