Family Reveals Mental Health Crisis Behind Phoenix Barricade Near Federal Courthouse

Mental Health Crisis Leads to Downtown Standoff in Phoenix

Last week, a tense situation unfolded in downtown Phoenix, right in front of the federal court building. U.S. Marshals had to close a busy street for over an hour as they handled a standoff involving a man who was undergoing a mental health crisis.

The man at the center of this incident is 25-year-old Garry Lister, who has schizophrenia. His sister, Randi, expressed her fears about how things could have turned out. “I was worried that he was going to die,” she said, recalling the moment she heard police had guns drawn. “I needed to be there for him.”

The drama began when Garry was driving erratically. Randi noted that, at one point, the officers reached out to her for advice on how to calm him down. “They were trying to stop him, but he wouldn’t stop,” she explained, highlighting the challenge the officers faced.

Growing up, Randi described Garry as kind and respectful, but his mental illness can make him seem like a different person. “It’s hard to see him like this,” she shared. “He tries hard to get by, and I’m proud of him.”

Because Garry is over 18, Randi faces difficulties in helping him manage his condition. “He thinks we just want to interfere, but we want to help. When he’s in an episode, he doesn’t see that,” she added. Garry has been working with a case worker since 2020, which has provided some support, but ensuring he takes his medication remains a struggle.

Randi encourages families in similar situations to explore available resources for mental health support. “Use everything you can. I don’t want anyone to suffer, especially not my brother,” she said earnestly.

This crisis has been a wake-up call for Garry, according to Randi. Such incidents highlight the urgent need for better mental health resources. Studies indicate that nearly one in five adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness, emphasizing the importance of adequate support systems.

As the investigation continues into whether Garry will face any charges, his family hopes this incident will lead to more awareness about the challenges of mental health. It’s crucial for communities to recognize and support those in need, aiming for a future where situations like these can be prevented.
