Just a couple of years ago, it seemed like *Coyote vs. ACME* would never make it to the big screen. Warner Bros Animation had canceled the film to save on taxes, refusing to let it go to another studio. But fans, some even dressed as Wile E. Coyote, protested loudly, and their voices were heard. Eventually, Ketchup Entertainment bought the rights, and now we finally have a trailer that’s getting a lot of buzz.
The idea for *Coyote vs. ACME* sparked from a funny 1990 article by Ian Frazier in *The New Yorker*. He humorously framed it like a legal case, siding with Wile E. Coyote against the ACME Corporation, which had a reputation for selling faulty products to the hapless character.
Directed by Dave Green, the movie features a script by Samy Burch, building on a story by Burch, James Gunn, and Jeremy Slater. The plot follows Wile E. Coyote as he decides enough is enough. After years of being blown up, crushed, and generally mishandled, he hires lawyer Kevin Avery, played by Will Forte, to take ACME to court for their wrongdoings. This twist now has the Coyote positioned as a hero standing against corporate greed.
Interestingly, the film’s premise draws parallels to its own tumultuous production. A voiceover in the trailer humorously states, “The ACME Corporation is releasing this film for accounting purposes only,” which feels timely given its own behind-the-scenes struggles.
The film’s history goes back to 2015 when James Gunn first pitched the idea. Initially, many classic Looney Tunes characters were off-limits, but the new trailer shows familiar faces like Road Runner and Bugs Bunny making appearances. The film promises to be a fresh take on the old cartoons while still capturing the Looney Tunes charm.
While the film was initially set to release in July 2023, Warner Bros opted to replace it with *Barbie* for what they believed to be a more profitable choice. Reports suggest they claimed a $30 million tax write-off instead of completing the film, which only fueled fan interest. Now, with the film getting more attention than ever, it’s up to those supporters to turn out and see it.
*Coyote vs ACME* is set to hit theaters on August 28. Many fans are speculating if it could spark the same kind of magic as *Who Framed Roger Rabbit?* Only time will tell.
