The George Mason men’s volleyball team wrapped up their 2026 season on Wednesday. They faced off against Princeton in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Tournament Quarterfinals, where they lost 3-1 at Penn State’s Rec Hall.
In the match, Princeton outperformed the Patriots in most categories. They scored more points overall (70.5 vs. 53.5), notched more kills (51 to 43), and had a significant edge in blocks (17 to 8). The Patriots managed only two aces, matching Princeton in that area.
Sophomore middle blocker Alexander Lillie led his team with 12 kills. He was followed closely by pin hitter Aidan Weltin, who had 10 kills, and junior outside hitter Robert Evangelista with seven. Senior setter Georgi Zahariev recorded a team-high 36 assists, showcasing his playmaking skills.
The game began with both teams fighting fiercely. George Mason took the first set 25-23. It featured numerous ties and lead changes, with Weltin scoring seven kills to lead the Patriots. However, Princeton quickly gained momentum, winning the next three sets with scores of 25-21, 25-17, and 25-16.
What stood out in the matchup was Princeton’s team defense. They consistently blocked George Mason’s attacks and capitalized on their errors, which became crucial in the later sets.
This season, George Mason finished with a solid record of 20-10. They will look to build on this performance as they aim for improvement in the upcoming season.
