Since its reboot on Channel 7 in 2020, many viewers feel the show has shifted away from its heartwarming roots, with some calling it too similar to Married At First Sight. Daisy Lamb, who found love with Todd Melbourne last season, shared her thoughts with Yahoo Lifestyle. She believes the producers chase drama, even though the farmers just want to enjoy the experience. “People watch for the drama, but that’s not what it used to be about,” she said.
Daisy expressed her hope that viewers might tire of the drama eventually, but with millions watching the last finale, it seems unlikely anytime soon.
Sophie Trethowan, another contestant, echoed Daisy’s sentiments. She felt many touching moments with her partner Dustin Manwaring were edited out in favor of more dramatic content. "So many genuine love stories don’t make it to air. A lot of nice moments get missed," she explained.
Farmer Corey acknowledged that some drama is natural in a competition where many women vie for the farmers’ attention. “There’s always a bit of cattiness and anxiety,” he remarked. Meanwhile, Farmer Thomas noted that his contestants fostered friendships, reducing drama on his farm. “They were respectful to each other and didn’t try to upset anyone,” he said.
From a broader perspective, reality TV continually shifts to keep audiences engaged, often emphasizing conflict over authenticity. Research shows that about 45% of viewers enjoy reality shows for the drama, even as many crave heartfelt stories.
The question now is: Can Farmer Wants A Wife find the right balance between drama and sincerity? For fans, striking that balance may mean revisiting what made the show appealing in the first place.
