Galloway, N.J. — The president of CR Flamengo, Brazil’s most beloved soccer team, recently visited Stockton University’s G. Larry James Stadium. He took a moment to touch its grass field, adding a layer of magic to their training experience.

From June 12 to 23, Flamengo prepared for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup on this campus. Their successful performance, including victories over Esperance Sportive de Tunis (2-0) and Chelsea FC (3-1), made headlines. They became the first team in their group to advance to the knockout stage.

Flamengo chose Stockton mainly for its top-notch Bermuda grass field. This grass was installed by the same company that worked on Lincoln Financial Field, ensuring a reliable playing surface. Their next match was set against Major League Soccer’s LAFC in Orlando, Florida.

Jeff Haines, Stockton’s associate director of Athletics and Recreation, emphasized the teamwork that made this partnership possible. Flamengo’s coach and administration were respectful and grateful. They appreciated a space where they weren’t constantly disrupted for autographs or photos, allowing them to focus on training.

Along with practice on the field, Flamengo used locker rooms, held meetings, and even found time for basketball in the nearby Sports Center.

The camp turned heads in the media, attracting roughly 20 journalists from Brazil each day. Gabriel Reis, a devoted Flamengo fan and journalist, captured the excitement on his popular YouTube channel, which boasts 1.5 million subscribers. For him, the camp at Stockton was a dream come true, especially after their win against Chelsea.

FIFA sees training camps like Stockton’s as vital. Tim Lenahan, a FIFA venue officer and former coach of Stockton’s men’s soccer team, stated that a comfortable environment can enhance a team’s performance. The players’ happiness and success during matches showed how much they thrived during their stay.

Baptista, Flamengo’s president, expressed his gratitude by presenting Stockton’s director of Athletics and Recreation, Tony Berich, with a silver plate. He highlighted the team’s wonderful experience and hoped for continued success in the tournament.

Looking ahead, Stockton may host another base camp for an upcoming World Cup team. Haines shared that Flamengo will recommend the university to future teams arriving in Philadelphia, a glowing endorsement of Stockton’s facilities.
