Florida Atlantic University’s men’s soccer team clinched the American Conference Postseason Tournament title by defeating Florida International University (FIU) 3-2. This win marks the Owls’ second conference championship, a proud moment for the program, especially since their last title was in 2007.
The match started with a setback for FAU. Just three minutes in, FIU found the net during a scramble in the box. Despite FAU goalkeeper Alfred Mikkelsen’s tough challenge, officials decided not to call a foul after reviewing the play.
But the Owls quickly regrouped. In the 20th minute, Josh Ainge set up Mamadou Diarra, the two-time Offensive Player of the Year, who blasted a goal, leveling the score. Just four minutes later, Ethan Schumaker headed in a corner from Aboubacar Traore, putting FAU ahead 2-1 at halftime.
In the second half, Diarra scored again in the 70th minute, extending the lead to 3-1. Felipe Santos assisted him with a pass that allowed Diarra to strike from outside the penalty area. Although FIU managed to score once more in the 80th minute, they couldn’t close the gap further. The Owls held on for a hard-fought win.
Diarra was named the Offensive Player of the Tournament, while Fabrizio Cubeddu earned the Defensive Player award, highlighting the team’s strong performance throughout the tournament.
Overall, this championship victory has earned FAU an automatic spot in the NCAA National Championship’s First Round. Fans eagerly await the announcement of their next opponent.
