High Point University has taken an exciting step forward in its men’s basketball program with the appointment of Flynn Clayman as the new head coach. Previously the associate head coach, Clayman has been a significant force behind the team’s recent success, particularly in recruiting and offensive strategies.
President Nido R. Qubein praised Clayman for his leadership and alignment with the university’s core values of God, Family, and Country. Clayman expressed gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing his commitment to steering the program positively.
Clayman steps in as the 15th head coach and brings impressive achievements to his new role. Over the past two seasons as the associate head coach, he helped lead the team to a remarkable record of 56-15. Notably, the Panthers made their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance, facing Purdue after winning back-to-back Big South Regular Season titles — a first in the program’s history.
The team’s performance has been outstanding. They recorded two straight seasons with over 20 wins, a feat not accomplished since the school transitioned to Division I. The Qubein Center has become a fortress, with only three losses at home, showcasing a strong 31-3 record.
This past season (2024-25), HPU tied the record for the most wins in Big South history, matching Winthrop’s 2006-07 achievement with a total of 29 victories. The Panthers also held the best win percentage in conference play at 88%. These numbers highlight not just progress but a commitment to excellence in collegiate basketball.
Clayman’s offensive strategies have paid off significantly. Under his guidance, the team ranked third in the NCAA for offensive efficiency, trailing only powerhouses like Duke and Gonzaga. This success underscored his ability to create dynamic plays and optimize player strengths.
Before joining High Point, Clayman honed his skills as a coach at Southern Utah, where he served in multiple roles, including a stint as interim head coach. His recruitment skills there helped place numerous players in top programs, emphasizing his broad network in college basketball.
Clayman’s journey also includes professional play overseas. His notable achievements as a player include being named the Eurobasket.com Rookie of the Year and leading his teams in key statistical categories.
With a solid academic background — he earned a Bachelor’s in Social Science and a Master’s in Sports Conditioning and Performance — Clayman not only brings experience and achievement but also a well-rounded perspective to coaching.
