SALISBURY — The Rufty-Holmes Senior Center has just received a $2,500 grant from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation. This funding aims to help those facing hunger in the community. With the grant dubbed “Nourishing Our Neighbors,” the center will tackle food insecurity and provide valuable nutrition education.
Callie Smith, the nutrition manager at Rufty-Holmes, shared, “This funding lets us supply nutritious meals that include fresh fruits, whole grains, and proteins. Our goal is to enhance the health of senior community members who need support.” Smith emphasized the importance of quality food in creating a caring atmosphere in the community.
The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation has been a crucial player in the fight against food insecurity since its founding in 2001. By offering financial assistance to local programs, they have helped communities thrive. Over the years, the foundation has donated over $19.6 million to support various initiatives aimed at feeding families in need across ten states.
According to recent statistics by Feeding America, approximately 1 in 8 Americans face hunger. For seniors, that number can be even higher, with many living on fixed incomes. Programs like the ones from Food Lion Feeds directly support those vulnerable populations. They not only provide meals but also focus on promoting healthier living through education.
This partnership between Food Lion and Rufty-Holmes is a great example of how community efforts can make a difference. As food insecurity continues to rise, initiatives like these are more important than ever. They contribute not only to providing meals but also to building stronger, healthier communities.
