Former CU Boulder Student Sentenced: Jail and Probation in Campus Sexual Assault Case

A former University of Colorado Boulder student, Brennan Pieper, was sentenced recently for a sexual assault case dating back to 2022. Pieper, 22, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual assault without consent. His sentence includes 90 days in jail and 10 years to life of intensive probation as a registered sex offender.

In August 2024, a jury had found Pieper guilty of two counts of sexual assault and unlawful sexual conduct. However, it was later revealed that his attorney may not have provided accurate information regarding a plea deal. As a result, the case was re-visited, leading to Pieper’s new plea agreement.

Under Colorado’s sex offender intensive probation program, Pieper faces strict conditions. These include regular contact with a probation officer, monitoring of his activities, curfews, and mandatory treatment. Violation of these terms could land him in state prison.

Pieper was arrested after a woman reported a disturbing incident on campus. The victim stated that during a nighttime encounter, Pieper forcibly penetrated her in a secluded area, despite her repeated denials. Initially, he denied being at the scene but later altered his story.

Pieper surrendered to begin his jail time on August 11 and is slated for release on October 17. Notably, his first defense attorney is currently under investigation for their role in this case.

Sexual assault remains a critical issue, with statistics revealing that 1 in 5 women and 1 in 16 men experienced sexual assault while in college, according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. This highlights the ongoing need for awareness and advocacy around consent and survivors’ rights.
