Born on September 26, 1932, in a village in Punjab, Dr. Singh excelled academically from an early age. He accomplished his Matriculation from Punjab University in 1948 and later pursued larger training within the United Kingdom. He earned a First Class Honors diploma in Economics from the University of Cambridge in 1957, adopted by a D.Phil. in Economics from Nuffield College, Oxford, in 1962.
Dr. Singh’s profession started in academia, educating at Punjab University and the Delhi School of Economics.
In 1971, Dr. Singh joined the Government of India as Economic Advisor within the Ministry of Commerce. He subsequently turned Chief Economic Advisor within the Ministry of Finance in 1972. His distinguished profession additionally included serving because the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
Dr. Singh’s tenure as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 was transformative for the Indian financial system. He spearheaded a complete coverage of financial reforms, incomes international recognition for his visionary management.
In 2004, the Indian National Congress gained the parliamentary elections, and Dr. Singh assumed the function of Prime Minister. He took the oath for a second time period on May 22, 2009. Over his political profession, Dr. Singh served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha (India’s Upper House of Parliament) from 1991, the place he was Leader of the Opposition from 1998 to 2004.
