French haute cuisine has reclaimed its title as the best in the world. This recognition comes after the Bocuse d’Or, a prestigious culinary competition that takes place every two years. In 2023, France didn’t even make the top three, but this year, they soared to victory.

Paul Marcon, a 29-year-old chef, led the French team to gold and expressed immense pride in their accomplishment. His win felt like a significant moment for French cuisine, reinforcing its historic reputation in fine dining.
For much of the 20th century, France dominated European culinary traditions, shaping what we now call gastronomy. However, in recent years, countries like Denmark have gained prominence, especially with the rise of New Nordic cuisine.
The Bocuse d’Or stands out among cooking competitions. It’s often called the Olympic Games of gastronomy. Many chefs aspire to win, as it brings fame that extends beyond their culinary circles. “Winning the Bocuse d’Or is like hitting the top charts in music,” said food historian Nina Bauer. “It makes you a global name.”
