French University Denies Admission to Gaza Student Due to Controversial Antisemitic Social Media Posts

A French university recently revoked a student’s enrollment due to her online posts deemed antisemitic. The student, Nour Atallah, 25, had shared messages that called for violence against Jews, leading to significant backlash.

Atallah was initially recommended for admission to Sciences Po Lille by the French consulate in Jerusalem. She even stayed with the university director while waiting for permanent housing. However, after discussions with national officials, the university decided to cancel her enrollment, emphasizing its commitment to combating racism and hate.

This decision came shortly after French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state, a move that angered many, especially amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Jewish leaders in France and Israeli officials criticized Macron’s announcement, viewing it as support for Hamas following the terrorist group’s attacks on October 7, 2023.

Social media reactions to Atallah’s posts were swift. Some users voiced concern about allowing individuals with such views into higher education. The increase in antisemitic remarks in France has been alarming, especially since the recent conflict began. Reports indicate that antisemitism incidents rose sharply, with attacks on Jewish institutions occurring more frequently.

Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated that “a Gazan student making antisemitic remarks has no place in France,” and he called for a review of the selection process that allowed Atallah’s admission. Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau also demanded action against her social media account, labeling it as “hateful.”
