Have you heard of “Fried Rice Syndrome”? It’s not a dish but a food poisoning concern linked to a germ called Bacillus cereus. This germ can make you sick if cooked food, like fried rice, is left out for too long.
When fried rice or other cooked meals sit out, they can get contaminated. Bacillus cereus is everywhere, especially in soil, and it loves to grow in both air-filled and airless environments. The good news is that most people who get sick experience mild symptoms that go away after a couple of days.
However, some cases can be more serious and might need medical help. Dr. Sakarn Bunnag from the Department of Medical Services points out that the symptoms usually include things like diarrhea and vomiting. These occur when you eat food with high levels of this harmful bacterium.
Normally, symptoms clear up in about two to three days. But if someone is very young, elderly, or has other health issues, they should see a doctor. These individuals are at a higher risk for more serious complications, including infections that can affect the bloodstream or even conditions like meningitis.
To stay safe, it’s best to eat freshly cooked meals and store leftovers properly. If food has been out for more than two hours, it’s safer to throw it away. A little caution goes a long way in keeping you and your family healthy!
