Francesco Friedrich from Germany continues to amaze in the bobsled world, clinching his 100th career victory on Sunday in Igls, Austria. This win marks a huge milestone, highlighting his incredible skill and dedication.
Friedrich has celebrated 35 wins in four-man World Cup races and achieved 51 victories in two-man events. In addition, he boasts eight two-man world championships and six in four-man competitions. His Olympic record is also impressive, with four gold medals—two each in two-man and four-man events.
Friedrich’s success is unparalleled in the sport. He has medaled in 31 of his last 32 World Cup four-man races and in 60 of his last 62 World Cup two-man races. Just the day before, he took silver in the two-man event. Overall, he has medaled in 142 out of 197 World Cup races throughout his career.
In the four-man race on Sunday, Brad Hall from Britain earned the silver medal, while fellow German Johannes Lochner secured third place. The top U.S. sled, driven by Frank del Duca, finished in 10th place.
Later that day, in the two-woman race, Germany showcased its talent by sweeping the podium. Laura Nolte and Deborah Levi took gold, followed by Kim Kalicki and Leonie Fiebig in silver, and Lisa Buckwitz with Neele Schuten in bronze.
The top American team, with Elana Meyers Taylor and Jasmine Jones, finished fourth in the women’s event.
In Winterberg, Germany, Jonas Mueller of Austria had a stellar day, winning gold in the men’s singles luge and then contributing to Austria’s victory in the team relay. He narrowly defeated Max Langenhan from Germany for the singles title, with Nico Gleirscher of Austria in third place. The best American finisher was Jonny Gustafson, coming in at 20th.
In the team relay, Mueller teamed up with other top Austrian sliders to secure another gold, while Germany and Italy followed in second and third places, respectively.
The U.S. team placed fourth in the relay, with Emily Sweeney putting in a strong performance by achieving the fastest split time among all the women competitors. She also earned a bronze medal in the singles event the previous day.
Looking ahead, the bobsled World Cup will feature the women’s monobob on Friday in St. Moritz, Switzerland. In luge, events including women’s doubles, men’s doubles, and women’s singles will take place Saturday in Oberhof, Germany. The skeleton World Cup season will wrap up with competitions for men’s, women’s, and mixed teams on February 7 in Lillehammer, Norway.
