From Gangs to Glory: Ryan Peake’s Inspiring Journey to Qualify for the 2025 British Open

Ryan Peake has just experienced a major turning point in his life. He recently won the New Zealand Open and secured a spot in the 2025 Open Championship.

“I’ve just changed my life. This is what I do,” Peake expressed after his victory. His passion for golf shines through as he stated, “I want to be here and just play golf.”

Peake’s performance was impressive. He finished the tournament with a score of 23 under par, finishing just one shot ahead of Ian Snyman, Jack Thompson, and Kazuki Higa. In his final round, he shot five under, which secured his win.

According to the Associated Press, Peake was once considered a promising junior golfer, but his career was put on hold for five years. He had a challenging past as a member of the Rebels biker gang in Australia and faced legal troubles after being convicted of assault at 21.

With the support of his coach, Ritchie Smith, Peake has revived his golfing career. “I always knew I could do it. It was a matter of when,” he said. He credited his family and team for their belief in him, which motivated him to succeed.

However, Peake’s past still lingers. He faced some delays getting to Queenstown for the tournament due to customs issues, as reported by the BBC. He managed to get through customs just two days before the event started.

Looking ahead, Peake will need to navigate more bureaucratic hurdles this summer before heading to the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland for the Open Championship, which begins on July 17.
