Local Comedian Finds Humor in Second Chances
Susan Horne, a 50-year-old woman from Staunton, Virginia, is on a mission to spread laughter. After a life-threatening illness, she decided it was time to pursue her dream of stand-up comedy.
Two years ago, Susan faced a severe health scare when a bout with the flu led to pneumonia. She spent time in the ICU, where doctors struggled to keep her alive. “They pulled out over four liters of fluid from my chest,” she recalled. “They told me that I had just eight hours left. It changed my perspective on life.”
This experience pushed her to think about whether she was truly using her gifts. “Life is so short, and we often forget to make the most of it,” she said.
Now, she’s performing shows like “Fat Lives Matter,” blending humor with messages about body positivity. “It’s meant to be funny, not offensive,” she explained. She wants people to laugh about their insecurities, saying, “We all have our flaws. I think it’s funny that we can joke about that.”
Susan also focuses on clean comedy. As a mom and an educator, she loves making families laugh together. “I want parents to feel comfortable bringing their kids to my shows,” she shared.
Her journey in comedy began at a school called “The Funny Womacks.” After completing her training, she performed at a sold-out event in Bridgewater. That night, she realized she could take this further.
The best part of her work? The stories she hears from fans. “People tell me how much a show helped them through tough times,” she said. “Laughter can truly be healing.”
