If you love K-pop and K-dramas, why not explore Korean cuisine? I grew up on dal chawal in North India, but now I’m experiencing Korean food while living in Gwangju.
My Arrival in South Korea
Coming to South Korea opened my eyes to a brand-new culinary world.
First Taste of Korean Food
Before my journey, I only knew Korean food from shows and restaurants in Patiala, Punjab. Those dishes had a very Indian flair due to the spices used. I was excited to try real Korean dishes. Watching K-dramas showed me soups and spiced meals that reminded me of classics like butter chicken and paneer tikka.
Spicy Love for Meat
From what I saw in dramas, Koreans really enjoy spicy food and a variety of meats. They use every part of cows and pigs, showing a deep appreciation for their ingredients. Plus, seafood is a regular feature in meals, as vegetables aren’t as common here.
Challenges with Korean Cuisine
As a vegetarian, I faced a significant challenge—most dishes contain meat or seafood. In Korea, many people think vegetarian means avoiding just meat. To get around this, I started telling people I was a vegan, which opened up more food options. This struggle wasn’t just at restaurants; many snacks and products, like chips and jams, also contain meat.
New Flavors and Ingredients
Another adjustment was the cooking oil. Back in India, I’m used to refined oil, while Korean dishes are often cooked in sesame oil. At first, the taste was different, but it gradually grew on me.
Discovering New Favorites
Bibimbap quickly became one of my go-to options. It’s a rice dish topped with veggies and Gochujang, a spicy red pepper paste. I also fell in love with Tteokbokki, a chewy rice cake dish that is surprisingly easy to make.
Tips for Food Lovers
If you’re planning to visit Korea, brush up on your chopstick skills. Many restaurants don’t offer forks or spoons. Also, expect a delightful surprise: no matter what you order, you will receive multiple side dishes, usually including various types of kimchi. From radish kimchi to cabbage kimchi, they offer a feast of flavors right alongside your main dish!
