On Saturday night, the University of San Francisco (USF) men’s basketball team faced a tough opponent, the Saint Mary’s Gaels, losing 79-54. Despite the loss, there were some bright spots for the Dons.
Right from the start, Junjie Wang scored the opening basket, giving USF a brief 3-0 lead. However, Saint Mary’s quickly turned the tide, going on a 10-2 run led by Mikey Lewis and Paulius Murauskas. David Fuchs kept things competitive with a three-pointer, narrowing the gap to 10-8.
As the first half progressed, Saint Mary’s pulled ahead, with four players scoring over eight points. By halftime, the Gaels were comfortably in front, 40-29.
In the second half, Saint Mary’s came out strong, launching a 9-0 run that forced USF to call a timeout. The Dons struggled to catch up, and the game ended with Saint Mary’s securing the 79-54 victory.

Looking Ahead
The Dons will regroup and head back home to face Oregon State on February 12 as part of the Bill Russell Impact Classic. This matchup offers an excellent opportunity for the team to bounce back.
Basketball teams often analyze performance through metrics, and recent studies indicate that maintaining low turnover rates can substantially increase a team’s chances of winning. In fact, a report from the NCAA shows that teams with a turnover rate below 10% typically win a greater percentage of their games. This insight highlights how crucial it is for teams like USF to continue improving on ball control.
