A New Chapter for Florida Football
It’s been seven long years since Florida football kicked off a season against an FCS team. This year, the Gators will face Long Island University (LIU) in a game that promises excitement and hope.
In previous seasons, Florida took bold steps by challenging ranked opponents right out of the gate. However, these early games often set a tough tone, leading to disappointing losses. Now, with LIU, the Gators can start fresh.
LIU, only seven years old as a program, has yet to find success against FBS teams, suffering losses in all six attempts. Florida’s last match against an FCS team was in 2018, with a commanding 53-6 victory over Charleston Southern. Recently, they showed promise in a bounce-back game against Samford, winning 45-7. Freshman QB DJ Lagway led that charge, showcasing his potential with impressive stats.
This season feels different for Florida fans. Lagway, a standout sophomore at 6-foot-3 and 247 pounds, is generating real excitement. He’s not the only reason for optimism, though. Under Coach Billy Napier, the Gators have strong offensive playmakers and a solid offensive line.
Florida’s defense also has key players returning, ready to capitalize on late-season success from the previous year. They finished strong, winning four of their last five games, including victories over ranked opponents like No. 9 Ole Miss and a rivalry win against Florida State.
Lagway will lead an offense loaded with talent, despite having a limited preseason due to a calf injury. He aims to start strong in the opener against LIU. The Gators anticipate a high-scoring game, especially with LIU’s struggling defense, which allowed nearly 330 yards per game last season.
