Georgetown University has announced Eduardo M. Peñalver as its new president. Currently the president of Seattle University, Peñalver will take over on July 1, 2026. He replaces Robert M. Groves, who has served as interim president since John J. DeGioia stepped down in late 2024 after a health issue.
Peñalver is significant as he was the first layperson to lead Seattle University in its 134 years. His impressive background includes roles as dean at Cornell Law School and a professor at several prestigious institutions. He earned degrees from Yale and Cornell, and also studied philosophy and theology at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar.
Thomas A. Reynolds, chair of the board of directors, praised Peñalver’s deep understanding of the Catholic and Jesuit traditions, along with his commitment to social justice and academic excellence. The board formed a search committee to gather input from the community, emphasizing transparency and collaboration.
In addition to Peñalver’s appointment, the board discussed new construction projects, including a Humanities Quad that will consolidate the humanities departments. This initiative aims to create a space where students can collaborate and engage with various disciplines. The renovated buildings will also honor President Emeritus DeGioia by renaming them after him.
The Humanities Quad will feature a dedicated Humanities Center, promoting interdisciplinary studies and fostering new ideas. “This hub is crucial for integrating humanities education into our liberal arts approach,” said Soyica Diggs Colbert, interim provost.
Additionally, Georgetown is renovating McNeir Auditorium and creating a Clinical Simulation and Innovation Center in partnership with MedStar Health. The simulation center will serve multiple disciplines, enhancing training and research opportunities. Dr. Norman J. Beauchamp highlighted the immense potential for research and education that this facility will offer, scheduled to open in fall 2027.
During the meeting, Peter Marra, dean of the Earth Commons, spoke about initiatives addressing environmental challenges both locally and in climate-vulnerable regions like Greece. His research focuses on bird ecology and conserving migratory species, essential for understanding climate impacts.
Finally, four new board members were welcomed, including Gail Gillis-Louis and Cary Grace. Their diverse backgrounds will support Georgetown’s mission as the university continues to shape the future of education and research.
