Get Ready for the 2026 Season: NIU Football’s Official Mountain West Opponents Revealed!

DeKalb, Ill. – The Mountain West Conference has announced the upcoming football schedule for 2026, marking Northern Illinois University’s debut in this new league. This is a big moment for Huskie Football, and fans are eager to see what’s next.

With the announcement, season ticket renewals are starting. Fans can also get involved by helping the team with special giving opportunities. Current season ticket holders will soon receive details about renewing their tickets and additional options for supporting the program, including a unique excellence fee.

Sean T. Frazier, NIU’s Vice President and Director of Athletics, shared his excitement about the new matchups. He emphasized how important this transition is, not just for the team but for the entire Huskie community. “Our road games will take us to some great places that fans will love visiting,” he said. He also acknowledged the need for extra resources to compete effectively in this new conference.

Next season, the Huskies will host four teams: Hawai’i, Nevada, UTEP, and Wyoming. This will be the first time NIU plays Hawai’i, while they have faced Nevada and Wyoming in the past. On the road, the Huskies will challenge Air Force, New Mexico, San José State, and UNLV, with the games against Air Force and New Mexico being first-time encounters.

Historically, NIU played Nevada and San José State when they were in the Big West Conference from 1993 to 1995, showing how the college football landscape has changed over the years. This move highlights the ongoing evolution in college athletics, where teamwork and strategy play a vital role in the game’s future.

To celebrate this transition, NIU Athletics is introducing exclusive giving levels for fans. The $260 tier includes a commemorative ticket, limited to just 100 fans. The $2,600 tier offers a framed NIU Mountain West jersey numbered #26, available to only 10 supporters. Both items mark this historic moment in Huskie history.

Support from fans is crucial as the Huskies navigate this new chapter. Proceeds from these initiatives will directly enhance the student-athlete experience, making a lasting impact on the team.

As the 2026 season approaches, excitement is building. Fans are encouraged to join in this journey as NIU football embarks on its Mountain West adventure.
