Giant Eagle, a well-known food and pharmacy retailer, has partnered with EmpiRx Health to manage its employees’ pharmacy benefits. With more than 200 pharmacies, Giant Eagle serves areas across Western Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, and Indiana.

This collaboration aims to build a national network of pharmacy chains that will enhance patient health and tackle the issues of rising prescription drug costs. The partnership comes on the heels of EmpiRx Health launching AllyRx, a new pharmacy care network specifically designed for grocery and pharmacy retailers. This network will provide essential services to help improve health outcomes for employees while also cutting down on prescription expenses.

EmpiRx Health’s unique approach includes a pharmacist-focused service model and advanced AI technology. They worked closely with industry leaders, including those from Giant Eagle, to create AllyRx. This model emphasizes patient care, putting pharmacists at the forefront of pharmacy management.

A representative from EmpiRx highlighted that AllyRx was developed to meet the needs of pharmacies and grocery chains, which expressed the desire for a partner that supports their local pharmacies. This network will utilize EmpiRx’s patient-centric and pharmacist-led model, aided by AI-driven insights to better manage pharmacy benefits.

Additionally, EmpiRx has developed a population management engine that delivers real-time clinical strategies tailored for specific patient groups. They use the Johns Hopkins ACG System to analyze population health using data from diagnoses, prescriptions, and lab results. This system generates risk profiles, both clinical and financial, which can guide patient care decisions.

With a focus on high-cost specialty medications, EmpiRx’s open formulary allows pharmacists to recommend alternative dosing or lower-cost drugs. This is especially important as specialty drugs are projected to account for 43% of total global spending by 2028, escalating to more than 55% in major developed markets like the U.S., according to a recent IQVIA report.

EmpiRx’s approach has achieved impressive results, including an 88% engagement rate with physicians, a 93% adherence rate for patients taking their medications, and a 64% therapeutic switch rate.

As the healthcare landscape evolves, partnerships like this one are essential. They not only aim to improve health outcomes but also address the financial pressures faced by patients and healthcare providers alike.
