Goodbye to the Era of Cheap Imports: Discover How New Tariffs are Redefining U.S. Shipping Costs

A significant shift in shopping habits for many Americans has just taken place. The long-standing “de minimis rule,” which allowed low-value packages from abroad to enter the U.S. duty-free, has changed. Previously, packages valued under $800 could come in without any tariffs. This rule has been around for nearly a century, letting consumers buy from global vendors like Shein and AliExpress without extra costs.

Now, as of midnight Eastern Time, all imported goods, regardless of their value, are subjected to tariffs ranging from 10% to 50%. In certain cases, a flat fee of $80 to $200 may apply for the next six months. This change affects online shopping and delivery, putting more pressure on businesses and consumers alike.

Major delivery services in Europe, Japan, and other countries have paused shipments to the U.S. due to the logistical challenges that the new tariff rules create. UPS, however, is prepared and doesn’t expect delays, while DHL anticipates some delays during this transition period.

Chris Raderstorf, who co-owns Scrub Identity, sees this change as a chance for small businesses to compete better against bigger retailers. He believes that the tariffs may level the playing field for local vendors who have struggled amidst the growth of online shopping. A report by the Coalition for a Prosperous America highlights that big companies like Amazon and Walmart gained substantial revenue through the loophole that the de minimis rule offered.

According to data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), packages that would have qualified for duty-free status dropped from an average of 4 million a day to just 1 million since the end of the exemption for China and Hong Kong. Raderstorf hopes this will encourage Americans to support their local businesses. “When they shop locally, their money stays within the community,” he notes.

While this change may raise prices for consumers, it could shift purchasing habits back toward local businesses, benefiting communities in the long run.
