The government has declared Savar, part of Dhaka district, a ‘Degraded Air Shed’ to tackle severe air pollution. This new rule means all types of brick kilns—except tunnel and hybrid Hoffman kilns—will be shut down starting September.

According to the Department of Environment’s announcement, this move aims to reduce air pollution that poses health risks to residents. Recent data shows that air pollution levels in Savar are nearly three times higher than the national standards.

Research indicates that excessive air pollution can lead to serious health issues like respiratory problems and heart disease. During the dry season, pollution from Savar drifts into Dhaka, worsening air quality for the city’s many inhabitants. The expectation is that by halting brick kiln operations, the air quality will improve in both areas.

Experts agree that such decisive actions are crucial. Dr. Anwar Hossain, an environmental scientist, notes, “Regulating industries that contribute to air pollution is vital for public health. Proactive measures can help us breathe cleaner air.” The long-term impact of these regulations could mean a healthier future for residents in Savar and Dhaka alike.

The government’s action aligns with growing awareness about air quality issues worldwide. A recent global survey showed that air pollution is a significant concern for many cities, leading to increased calls for better regulations and cleaner technologies.

This announcement is a pivotal step toward improving public health and ensuring a cleaner environment, showing that protecting our air quality is not just a local issue, but a global one.
