Instead of removing Adams from office, as Hochul had considered, she plans to implement safeguards. These could involve appointing an independent monitor to keep an eye on activities at City Hall.
This week, Hochul reportedly met with several key New York leaders while contemplating the best course of action regarding Adams. Meanwhile, some senior prosecutors in New York and Washington have stepped down after resisting a Department of Justice order to drop charges against him.
Adams, a former police officer, was indicted on serious allegations including wire fraud, bribery, and accepting campaign contributions from foreign sources. The charges, revealed in September 2024, led him to plead not guilty.
Critics from within his own party have suggested that Adams is trying to gain favor with Trump to influence the outcome of his legal troubles. Adams has flatly denied these claims. “I want to be crystal clear with New Yorkers: I never offered — nor did anyone offer on my behalf — any trade of my authority as your mayor for an end to my case. Never,” he stated.
Hochul’s concerns about what’s happening at City Hall persist, especially as she awaits a ruling from U.S. District Judge Dale Ho on whether the case against Adams will be dismissed. The future of the mayor’s office remains uncertain as these developments unfold.
