Governor Lee Celebrates Successful Conclusion of Special Legislative Session: Key Initiatives Passed

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Governor Bill Lee has wrapped up a special legislative session in Tennessee with significant new laws. He celebrated the passing of his main agenda items, including the Education Freedom Act, a disaster relief package, and new public safety measures related to immigration.

“This week, Tennessee made important strides in education, disaster recovery, and immigration enforcement,” said Gov. Lee. “I appreciate the quick action from the General Assembly. Their support of these policies will enhance opportunity, security, and freedom for our citizens.”

Highlights of the Education Freedom Act:

• SB6001/HB6004: This law brings in Education Freedom Scholarships, giving families more school choice. It also boosts public school funding through teacher bonuses and better K-12 facilities support.
• SB6005/HB6005: Allocates $145.9 million for scholarships, $198.4 million for teacher bonuses, and more for improving school infrastructure funded by sports wagering revenue.

Gov. Lee is dedicated to public education, promising significant investment in the Tennessee Investment in Student Achievement (TISA) formula and raising starting teacher pay in future sessions.

Disaster Relief for Hurricane Helene:

• SB6003/HB6003: Sets up two disaster relief funds. One fund will help local governments cover loan interest related to recovery costs, while another will offer flexible financial support for future emergencies.
• SB6004/HB6002: Allows unemployment benefits waivers for claimants and clarifies the role of the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) in disaster recovery.

The total allocation for disaster recovery includes funds for local governments and the rebuilding of Hampton High School, which was severely impacted by Hurricane Helene.

Public Safety and Immigration Efforts:

• SB6002/HB6001: Aims to enhance immigration enforcement by creating a new division to coordinate with federal policies. This includes stricter requirements for state-issued IDs and penalizing sanctuary city policies.
• Local governments are encouraged to support immigration law enforcement through a new grant program aimed at training and resources.

“This special session brought many wins for Tennesseans. We now have a real choice in education, solid plans for immigration law enforcement, and vital support for disaster recovery,” said Lt. Gov. Randy McNally. “It was a productive week for Tennessee.”
