Greenland’s government recently voiced strong objections to the arrival of a U.S. doctor, Joseph Griffin, who accompanied Donald Trump’s special envoy, Jeff Landry. The Greenlandic Health Minister, Anna Wangenheim, expressed concern, stating that Greenlanders should not be treated as “experimental subjects.”
Griffin claims his role is to volunteer and assess the medical needs of the island. However, this has raised alarm bells for the Greenlandic government. Wangenheim highlighted the unique challenges of Greenland’s healthcare system, noting a shortage of medical professionals and the vast distances that complicate access to care. “Our healthcare must grow from respectful cooperation, not from political maneuvers,” she emphasized.
Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also criticized the visit, stating that proper channels should be used to understand Greenland’s health situation. This follows Trump’s past assertions about the U.S. acquiring the territory, which have strained relations between the U.S. and Denmark, both NATO allies.
In recent years, Greenland’s healthcare has been a sensitive topic due to historical abuses. Danish doctors were involved in an infamous scandal where local women underwent IUD placements without consent from 1966 to 1970, aimed at controlling the population. The former Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, apologized last year, reflecting on the need for better respect for Greenlandic autonomy.
Currently, the U.S. delegation, which is also attending a business conference, has reiterated its interest in Greenland. However, Nielsen firmly stated that Greenland is not for sale and underscored their right to self-determination.
In a survey conducted by the Greenlandic Institute of Public Health, 65% of residents expressed concerns about foreign interventions in their healthcare. This indicates a strong desire for dialogue that respects Greenland’s sovereignty. As the world watches, the tension over how Greenland navigates its healthcare and international relations remains a critical issue.
